Understanding Exponents
What is an Exponent?
An exponent refers to the number of times a number (called the base) is multiplied by itself. For example, in the expression 23, 2 is the base and 3 is the exponent. This means 2 × 2 × 2 = 8.
Exponent Formula
The general formula for exponentiation is:
baseexponent = result
Where the base is multiplied by itself exponent number of times.
Example Calculations
Example 1: 53 = 5 × 5 × 5 = 125
Example 2: 24 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16
Example 3: 102 = 10 × 10 = 100
Example 4: 71 = 7 (any number to the power of 1 is itself)
Example 5: 40 = 1 (any number to the power of 0 is 1)

Difference Between Exponent and Power
While these terms are often used interchangeably, there is a subtle difference:
- Exponent: The small number written above and to the right of the base number, indicating how many times the base is multiplied by itself.
- Power: The entire expression (base and exponent together) or sometimes the result of the exponentiation.
For example, in 23 = 8:
- 2 is the base
- 3 is the exponent
- 23 is the power
- 8 is the value of the power
