Wilks Formula & Process

Wilks Formula

The Wilks Score is calculated using this official formula:

Wilks = Total × 500 ÷ (a + b×BW + c×BW² + d×BW³ + e×BW⁴ + f×BW⁵)

Where:

  • Total = Squat + Bench + Deadlift
  • BW = Body weight in kilograms
  • a-f = Gender-specific coefficients

Calculation Process

1. Input body weight & total lifted
2. Convert to kilograms if needed
3. Apply gender-specific coefficients
4. Calculate and display Wilks Score

Complete Guide to Wilks Score

What is the Wilks Score?

The Wilks Score, also known as the Wilks Coefficient or Wilks Formula, is a scientific method for comparing powerlifting performance across different body weights. Developed by Robert Wilks of Powerlifting Australia, this formula levels the competitive field by accounting for the physiological reality that larger athletes can typically lift more weight. The Wilks Score converts an athlete’s total lifted weight into a standardized score that reflects relative strength rather than absolute strength.

How Does the Wilks Calculator Work?

Our Wilks Score Calculator uses the official formula recognized by international powerlifting federations. It takes your body weight and total lifted weight (squat + bench press + deadlift) as inputs and applies gender-specific polynomial coefficients to calculate your score. The formula accounts for the non-linear relationship between body weight and strength potential, with lighter athletes receiving proportionally higher scores for the same absolute lifts. This allows for fair comparison between powerlifters of all sizes.

Fair Comparisons

The Wilks formula enables fair strength comparisons across different weight classes, essential for determining the “best lifter” in competitions.

Progress Tracking

Track your relative strength improvements over time, even as your body weight changes during training cycles.

Competition Standards

Understand how your strength measures against competitive standards and elite powerlifting levels.

Scientific Accuracy

The Wilks Formula Explained

The Wilks formula uses a sixth-degree polynomial equation with different coefficients for men and women. For men, the coefficients are: a = -216.0475144, b = 16.2606339, c = -0.002388645, d = -0.00113732, e = 7.01863E-06, f = -1.291E-08. For women: a = 594.31747775582, b = -27.23842536447, c = 0.82112226871, d = -0.00930733913, e = 0.00004731582, f = -0.00000009054. The formula calculates a coefficient that is multiplied by the total lifted to produce the Wilks Score.

Why Powerlifters Need Wilks Score

Powerlifting competitions are divided into weight classes, but determining the overall strongest lifter requires accounting for body weight differences. The Wilks Score solves this problem by mathematically normalizing performances. It’s used in most powerlifting federations worldwide to award “Best Lifter” titles in meets with multiple weight classes. Additionally, lifters use Wilks Scores to set realistic goals, compare their progress with athletes of different sizes, and qualify for elite competitions that often have Wilks-based standards.

Understanding Wilks Score Values

Wilks Scores typically range from 0 to 150+ for elite lifters. A score under 200 is generally beginner level, 200-300 represents intermediate lifters, 300-400 indicates advanced strength, and 400+ signifies elite performance. World-class powerlifters often achieve scores above 500. It’s important to note that these ranges vary between men and women, with women typically having slightly lower scores due to physiological differences in strength potential relative to body weight.

Example Calculations

Let’s examine two hypothetical powerlifters: Lifter A weighs 75kg with a 600kg total (Wilks Score ≈ 400). Lifter B weighs 120kg with a 800kg total (Wilks Score ≈ 385). Despite Lifter B lifting more absolute weight, Lifter A has a higher Wilks Score, indicating greater relative strength for their body size. Another example: A 60kg female lifter with a 300kg total might score around 350 Wilks, while a 90kg male with a 700kg total might score around 420 Wilks.

History and Development

Robert Wilks developed the formula in the 1990s while serving as CEO of Powerlifting Australia. He analyzed thousands of powerlifting performances to create a statistically valid method for comparing lifters across weight classes. The formula was officially adopted by the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and has since become the standard for most powerlifting competitions worldwide. While alternative formulas exist (like DOTS, recently adopted by some federations), Wilks remains the most widely recognized and used coefficient system.

Our free Wilks Score Calculator provides accurate calculations using the official formula, helping powerlifters of all levels understand their relative strength and track their progress effectively. Whether you’re a competitive powerlifter or just tracking your gym progress, understanding your Wilks Score provides valuable insight into your strength development.
